I just came across this on Congoo‘s website:

*Congoo members can view FREE articles every month from each partn site!
The number of free articles per month varies by publisher.

Partnr? The removal of vowels has now been extended into not only regular text, but small print?

This smells rather vigorously of a Web 2.0 company not taking itself too seriously.

Pinch me, will you?

  1. Actually, this appears more of a typo to me (perhaps type-no would better describe it), one of those events where the typist’s brain got ahead of his fingers (although I would think before posting one would proof or run a spell-check). Dunno.

In (many) other posts you mention Web 2.0’s “encouragement” of “making up words” (the quotes are only approximate, I didn’t take the time to look them up again to verify accuracy). One of the most horrible coinages is “powered by”, where now everything is “powered by” something which has no inherent “power” whatsoever! (“Powered by stupidity” might be apropos.)

I despair almost daily of the spread of illiteracy, powered increasingly by Web 2.0. If I had a penny for every use of “your” in place of “you’re” I would be far wealthier than anyone powered by all those Google ads! Every time I see this I want to respond, “Your stoopid!” But, hey! Who could figure it out? Web 2.0 is powered by money, not intelligence!

  2. You’re right, it does read partn, not partnr as I first thought. I guess my eyes got ahead of my brain.

Bugger. It was too good to be true, wasn’t it?

I haven’t really thought about the “Powered by” element. But when I think about, it must be sorta widespread since the better half of all start-ups base themselves on other companies’ APIs.

As for the grammar issue your talking about, that’s been around ever since, well, ever since the birth of the internet. You would TRULY be rich, Karl.
